Which claims are processed by TFF?

At Swedish Motor Insurers (TFF) we process claims caused by unknown or uninsured vehicles that are required to have motor third party liability (MTPL) insurance. In some cases we also process claims where foreign vehicles are involved.

Who will help you if you are injured by an uninsured vehicle?

We will – for example using the charge we levy on those who own uninsured vehicles.

If you are knocked down or had property destroyed by an uninsured or unknown motor driven vehicle there is no insurance company to compensate you for your injury or damage. That is when TFF helps. We process the claim and provide compensation in accordance with the provisions of the Motor Traffic Damage Act.

In Sweden MTPL insurance is compulsory. But uninsured and unknown vehicles cause injury and damage to people or property amounting to several hundred million kronor every year.

Claims we process

  • Property that has been damaged by an unknown or uninsured vehicle.
  • Personal injury arising when the person was in or on an uninsured vehicle required to have MTPL insurance.
  • Personal injury to a pedestrian or cyclist caused by an unknown or uninsured vehicle required to have MTPL insurance.

Claims we do not process

  • Parked vehicle damaged by an unknown vehicle.
  • Personal injury arising when a person was in or on an insured vehicle.
  • Personal injury to a pedestrian or cyclist caused by an insured vehicle.

Claims are divided into material damage and personal injury

The claims we process relate either to damage to property or personal injury, or both.

Material damage

By material damage is meant damage to a physical object that is not human. Injuries to animals are also regarded as material damage.

Examples of material damage:

  • A fence that has been knocked down by an unknown vehicle.
  • A bicycle that has been run into by an uninsured vehicle.
  • A cat that has been run over by an unknown vehicle as it ran across the road.

Personal injury

By personal injury is meant a physical or mental injury caused by a person’s action. At TFF we settle personal injury claims arising in traffic.

Examples of personal injury:

  • A person injured in a car accident when travelling in an uninsured vehicle.
  • Someone who has been knocked down by an unknown vehicle while crossing the road.
  • A cyclist that has been run into by an uninsured vehicle.
  • A person who was injured while driving an uninsured cross motorbike.

Remember that if you are injured in a traffic accident while travelling in an insured vehicle, the personal injury must be reported to the insurance company that issued its MTPL insurance.
