Parking claim
What is counted as a parking claim?
- Your motor driven vehicle was parked
- The claim was caused by another vehicle required to have motor third party liability (MTPL) insurance
- The incident occurred in Sweden.
All three points must apply to your claim. To receive compensation you must be able to show that it is probable that your vehicle was damaged by another motor driven vehicle in Sweden.
If your parked vehicle was not damaged by a motor driven vehicle, but for example by a person, a bicycle or a shopping trolley, this is not counted as a parking claim.
Who should you report to?
First and foremost you must report a parking claim to the police. Leaving the scene of a traffic accident is a crime. You can send a police report via the police eService.
The next step depends on if and how your vehicle was insured when the accident occurred.
Your vehicle has a vehicle damage guarantee
Report the claim to the insurance company that issued the vehicle damage guarantee. A report must be made within 90 days. If more than 90 days has passed, you must instead make the report to the insurance company where your MTPL or partial insurance policy was issued.
Your vehicle is insured in Sweden
Report the claim to your insurance company. The extent of insurance cover, that is whether you have MTPL insurance, partial or comprehensive cover is of no consequence.
Your vehicle is uninsured
Report the claim to us.
Your vehicle is registered outside Sweden
Report the claim to us.
Which claims are paid out?
Each claim must be assessed on the basis of events in each individual case. Consequently, it is not possible to specify exact conditions for when you will be compensated for a parking claim.
Examples of what is significant for the assessment:
- The appearance of the damage shows that it was made by another vehicle required to have MTPL insurance.
- You can describe where and when the vehicle was parked and how it was damaged.
- There are one or more witnesses who saw when the incident happened or who can testify to the condition of the vehicle when it was parked and/or collected. It may also be significant if a witness can testify to evidence at the site such as shattered glass, wheel tracks or parts from another vehicle.
Excess
In a claim caused by an unknown motor driven vehicle you must pay an excess. The excess is regulated in the Motor Traffic Damage Act and is five per cent of the price base amount in the year the claim was incurred. This year (2025) the excess is SEK 2,940.
If your claim is approved as a parking claim the excess will be deducted before compensation is paid out to you.
If you are not satisfied with the insurance company’s decision
If you have reported a parking claim to your insurance company and are not satisfied with their decision you can request that they make a new assessment. Contact the insurance company and state the reasons for your dissatisfaction.
If the insurance company does not change its decision you can request that we carry out a review, which means that we make a new assessment of the case. In that case, contact the insurance company, stating that you wish to have the case reviewed by TFF. The insurance company will then send all the case documentation to us. We will then notify our decision both to you and to the insurance company.
Processing of personal data
All Sweden’s insurance companies process parking claims on behalf of TFF. The processing is based on the provisions of the Motor Traffic Damage Act.
If your claim is approved as a parking claim by your insurance company they will pay compensation to you. The insurance company then notifies us of the cost and we pay to the insurance company. In connection with this personal data are sent to us.
