Reindeer killed in traffic
All claims reported for reindeer killed in traffic must be sent to TFF. We are responsible for a register of reports of reindeer killed in traffic. The information is sent to the Swedish Board of Agriculture, which compiles important industry statistics.
To report a claim you complete the form “Claim notification for reindeer killed in traffic”. When we have received and registered the claim notification we forward it to the insurance company that is to handle the claim, or alternatively we handle the claim.
It is important that all information is provided in the claim notification, both to enable us to register the claim and for the claim to be handled.
Forms and information material
Who handles your case?
- The vehicle that collided with the reindeer has motor third party liability (MTPL) insurance
The case is handled by the insurance company where the vehicle is insured for third party liability.
We at TFF are not responsible for any of these cases and consequently do not pay for reindeer claimed to have been injured in the accident that the insurance company refuses to pay compensation for. - The vehicle that collided with the reindeer is uninsured or unknown
We handle the case. - The vehicle that collided with the reindeer is foreign
We investigate where the vehicle is insured. We then send a claim notification to the foreign insurance company’s correspondent (representative) in Sweden, who handles the case.
What is required to receive compensation?
The reindeer owner’s information alone is not sufficient to receive compensation for reindeer killed in traffic. Thus, you as the reindeer owner cannot carry out the identification yourself. The claim notification must show who identified the reindeer, as well as who owned the reindeer.
Information from the driver of the vehicle and from others who were at the scene and who saw or identified the reindeer has a high value as evidence, as does finding a reindeer on a road with typical collision injuries. This is normally sufficient to satisfy the required standard of proof.
A valuation of tame castrated male reindeer ("tamhärk") and draft reindeer ("körren") must be made by SSR (National Association of the Sámi People in Sweden) and sent in together with the claim notification and police report.
No compensation is payable for:
- Search and identification.
- Death of unborn or born calf due to the collision with the reindeer cow.
Rules for compensation
The rules for compensation were determined in the agreement made between TFF and the National Association of the Sámi People in Sweden (SSR) in May 1994.
The compensation amounts are revised every year. The new amounts apply from 1 October. The amount of compensation paid is thus dependent on the year and time of year the claim was incurred.
