What vehicles are legally obliged to have motor insurance?

Section 2 of the Motor Traffic Damage Act (SFS 1975:1410) contains the following provisions:

”Motor vehicles that are registered in the Road Traffic Register and are not temporarily deregistered, and any other motor vehicles used on the road in Sweden, shall be covered by motor insurance.”

The following are examples of motor vehicles that must have motor insurance if they are not temporarily deregistered in the Road Traffic Register:

  • Cars
  • Lorries
  • Buses
  • Motorcycles
  • Mopeds
  • Tractors
  • Quad bikes/ATVs
  • Snowmobiles
  • Garden tractors/ride-on lawn mowers with a hitch hook or hitch ring
  • Trucks

Motor vehicles that are only driven within a completely enclosed training or competition area do not require motor insurance. This means, for example, that an uninsured dirt bike must be transported to and from training/competitions; it may not be driven on the road.

Contact TFF if you are unsure whether your vehicle legally requires motor insurance or not.

A motor insurance policy should be obtained by:

  • the person who owns the vehicle
  • the person who bought the vehicle on hire-purchase
  • the person who is leasing the vehicle for at least one year.
